First Words |
Nate and I are sick. Our chests are gurgly, our coughs are piercing and sharp, and our noses are damp and runny.
Nate is a real trooper though, and despite his congestion, he forges on, and continues to play with his shapes and bang the keys on his piano to the beat of his own soul warming music, determined not to let a drizzly nose interrupt his busy play schedule.
Because his birthday is so close to Christmas, and with the hustle and bustle of the holiday season upon us, his first birthday party is scheduled for this weekend. The invitations were sent weeks ago and I have been eagerly looking forward to celebrating his first year of life surrounded by the spirited laughter and comfortable glow of family.
But now I’m not sure what I should do.
There are a still a few days left for him to rest, but I don’t know if that will be long enough for his tiny body to heal and recover.
Should I just go ahead and cancel? Or should I take a wait and see approach? What would you do?
~ : ~
Also, Nate learned his first official word last week. He’s been stringing together random consonants and vowels for a while now, but I don’t think he understood what he was saying.
Until now that is.
I am positively glowing.

Yay for Nate! Mama is seriously the best first word ever. It was Mr. P's as well.
I would wait and see. For a first birthday party, it's more for the adults than the child, though.
He said MAMA! How wonderful!
I say wait and see. He might be feeling better in a day or two. Congrats on the new word. So Exciting!
There is nothing like hearing your child say Ma Ma. I remember Boston would say Da Da forever. I kept pressuring him to say Ma Ma and then he got really defiant and started saying "DADDY DADDY!" he says Ma Ma a lot though these days and it is music to my ears every time. As for the party I think you could take a wait and see approach. I am sure everyone will understand if you have to cancel. But if you cancel it now and then you both feel better by the weekend you'll probably regret it.
Oh, he is just adorable! Yay for first words, and mama of all things, it's gotta make your heart smile :)
As far as the party goes, I would be more likey to wait and see.
First word! How exciting. Feel better soon :-)
Awe...so fun, I miss all those cute "firsts."
I am sure Nate will be feeling better just in time for his party!
He is precious! Wait and see how he's feeling, I bet he's fine by then :) Have a great party and happy birthday Nate!
Hooray Nate!
I'd just do the party even if he is sick. If he's still playing I think it should be fine. This time of the year everyone is getting sick with runny noses.
Absolutely glorious, mama!
Doesn't that just make your heart sing?! Lucy is going through a huge Mum-Mum phase, only wanting me. And as hard as it is to be the only one she'll go to at 3 a.m., hearing her call my name in the darkness is worth every sleepless moment.
I'd still have the party, and use Nate as a guide. People will understand if he's grumpy or you have to send them home -- or Nate to bed! -- early.
Wait and see!
Great first word.
My kid only just now started saying mama (started talking with "uh-oh" six months ago) and it's really just haphazard and is "ma". I'm jealous!
Adorable!
Yay for Nate!! Its all go from now. soon he will be asking to borrow the car!!
What a wonderful day in your life! It's great that you were able to capture it and have it forever.
Oh, that just totally made my day! That's so cool that he kept saying it for you. Mine all realized that I wanted them to say it, then immediately stopped! Cherish this while you can, b/c soon enough you will be dreading that sound! Cole seems to remember my name only when crying anymore!
As for Nate's birthday party, I'd go on with it. If he's still happy and playing, why not? Worst case scenario, he gets tired and cranky and falls asleep, which could happen even if he wasn't sick!
Wait'n see. He can play diva and be tucked away, happily enveloped in fleece and stuffed buddies, whilst the adults who love him sip spirits a few steps away, celebrating his arrival into the world.
Get well soon! I hope everything works out with the party.
The video brought tears of joy to my eyes for you. So long in coming. Loved it. Atta Boy, Nate!
My Mom's visiting for the Thanksgiving holiday. Max was babbling away and she told me that she actually taught me to say "Da Da" first, so that when I called out in the middle of the night, she could turn to my Dad and say, "Dear, she wants you... " and then she could turn over and go back to sleep. Ha!
How sweet-I still haven't got Mama out of our boy. Doggy, daddy, ball, book...I'm obviously low on his list of priorities!
hes such a little ham. i can never get brandon to do anything at all on cue. i loooove it though. but please he is growing up way to fast k. make him slow down
Ahhh...that made me smile and warmed my heart! So precious!
*fans self*
*mutters...damn hormones*
Listening to Nate say Mama first made me smile and then made tears run...*sniff*
How very sweet!
It looks like you tooke wait-and-see approach and had the party.
What a great video. Two of my three kids said "Dada" before they said "Mama," so you have reason to be durn proud!
He is just too cute for words!
