Tummy Time
by Karla ° Wednesday, March 21, 2007
Tummy Time, according to Nate, is the worst thing EVER. And that is probably why he learned to roll over when we was only 9 weeks old because judging by the way he shrieks and screams when I place him on his stomach, you would think I just draped his limp baby body on top of a porcupine.

I suspect that is why his head still flops around when it isn’t being supported because when I try and make him do tummy time to strengthen his neck muscles, he gets so upset and cries so hard that I’m afraid he will suck all the oxygen out of the house with his rapid breathing of frantic distress.

And then I met a mom at my weekly mommy group meeting who suggested lodging him in my breastfeeding pillow to kind of prop him up a bit. And lo and behold, a new baby appeared before my eyes.

He now tolerates tummy time in small doses under the following conditions:
  • He gets exclusive dibs on the laptop to watch Baby Einstein Symphony of Exploding Colours and Nonsense Hand Puppet Improvisations.
  • Once boredom sets in watching lobsters salsa dance to Mozart, then, and only then should
  • I put my big mom head on the floor for him to swat at.

Zander was the same way. Tummy time was tantamount to laying him down on hot coals! Unfortunately the nursing pillow trick didn't work for him. He didn't enjoy time on his tummy until he was old enough to sit up. By then he could just get up off the floor when he wanted. I guess he didn't feel trapped on his tummy. Crazy kid!

I can't get over how much hair Nate has! He's got more than me....of course, that ain't hard!!!

Mr. P was not a big fan of tummy time, either. Nate will be up and walking before you know it!

Lucy just blew me away: when I logged on to your site, she took one look @ Nate and started rocking back and forth with her hands crossed -- her sign for baby!!!

Total proud mummy moment.

I think all babies hate tummy time. Lucy never enjoyed it either, a reason I think she took so long to crawl.

My girl hated tummy time too. Thank goodness for Baby Einstein. Which one does Nate like the best?

I'm pretty sure all babies go through this until one day when THEY do it because THEY want to because in the end, you know, the babies are really the bosses of the house!

awwww cute picture! I did hear the nursing pillow or other propping type items help babies who hate tummy time.

Noah wasn't one of these and LOVED being on his belly. He liked being on his playmat & would then fall fast asleep after tummy time. Oh, I miss those days!

Cole hates it too, but only after a few minutes. He tries and tries to crawl, and once he figures out that, yet again, it ain't happenin', he gets very, very pissed.

Does Nate like to pull your hair as much as Cole does mine? Those babies have strong little grips!

Hi Day
The one that seems to captivate Nate the most right now is Symphony of Fun (it has a giraffe on the front cover). There are fireworks and not much talking, just music and lots of colourful stuff to look at.

Mine hated tummy time too. Actually they hated anything that didn't involve constant physical contact with me with the most square inches of skin touching as possible. Christi actually gets to put her babies on the floor and they don't immediately start screaming. They even like it for a little while. I don't get it.

I am glad to hear that you have successfully fiqured out a way to do tummy time, even if it is only for a short time! Thank goodness for mommy groups, right! Nate is so cute watching his Baby Einstein!
